Touchline duel Rafa Benítez v Andras Herczeg

The Liverpool manager will be as intense as ever, knowing his team cannot afford to slip up in a game which, while it may appear a gimme, they simply cannot afford to drop points in. His opposite number, a former title winner with Debrecen as a player, has already succeeded where managers have failed for 14 years, by getting a Hungarian side into the group stages

Key Clash Fernando Torres v Mirsad Mijadinoski

The towering centre back, Debrecen’s big summer signing, will rarely have faced stiffer opposition, having spent all of his career in Switzerland and Eastern Europe. Despite his three goals in five games, Torres has looked a little off the pace at times this season, though Debrecen will know that has to change at some point.

Talking tactics

Rafa Benítez is unlikely to want to risk trampling the green shoots of Liverpool’s recovery, so will no doubt resist the temptation to give some of his more senior players an evening off. The Spaniard has commanded his team to start at a higher tempo than last season to try to kill games off, and Debrecen are likely to start cautiously in the hope of weathering the storm.

Fiorentina have announced their squad for the upcoming Champions League match against Lyon and Adrian Mutu returns to the fold, according to Viola Channel.

The Romanian has recovered from a muscular injury that kept him out of the last two Serie A matches against Palermo and Cagliari. It remains to be seen if the player will immediately be reinserted into the starting line-up, following the excellent form of youngster Stevan Jovetic.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Zanetti is suspended for the Viola, while summer signings Lorenzo De Silvestri and Jose Castillo will miss out through injury.

The Italians also faced Lyon in the group stages last season, with the fixture at the Stade Gerlande ending in a 2-2 draw.

VfB Stuttgart
vs
Rangers

Date: September 16th
Time: 18:45 (GMT)
VfB Stuttgart are no strangers to Walter Smith’s Rangers team, having come up against them on their last foray into the Champions League in 2007 and in the group stages in 2003.

Two years ago, goals from Charlie Adam and Barry Ferguson weren’t enough in Germany, as they went down 3-2 to a last minute Ciprian Marica winner.

At Ibrox though, comeback goals from Adam and Jean-Claude Darcheville sealed a 2-1 win.

They negotiated their way through to the group stages through the non-champions path of the play-offs, with a 2-0 away win against Romanian side Timisoara enough to see them through after a goalless return leg at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Stuttgart – managed by Markus Babbel - are strong at the back, with former Arsenal ‘keeper Jens Lehmann in goals and ex-Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz amongst their more experienced players.

As for danger men, Rangers will need to keep a keen eye on Alex Hleb, on loan from Barcelona, captain Thomas Hitzlsperger and Brazilian born forward Cacau, who was recently capped for his adopted nation of Germany.

So far this season, Stuttgart have picked up four points from their first three matches. An opening day loss to champions Wolfsburg wasn’t the start they had in mind, but they have since recovered to defeat Freiburg 4-2 and draw 1-1 away to Borussia Dortmund.

Their home games are played at the aforementioned Mercedes-Benz Arena, which holds just under 56,000. It was a host stadium during the 2006 World Cup, hosting England’s 1-0 win over Ecuador and the third-place play-off fixture between Germany and Portugal.
