Marseille vs AC Milan

Olympique de Marseille will face AC Milan in the Champions League at the very best possible moment, according to African football great Abedi Pele, who won the European Cup with les Phoceens back in 1993 – the last piece of silverware the club have claimed.

“It’s an important game – it’s the first day of the Champions League,” he affirmed to the club’s official website while watching son Jordan play in a reserve match at the weekend. “OM have a team ready to go far in this competition. With their recruitment, they can aim high. We will see the capacity of OM after the match against AC Milan.”

Les Phoceens would have hoped for a kinder group stage draw, with big spending Real Madrid and renowned footballing powerhouse Milan both involved in their pool, as well as Swiss minnows FC Zurich. However, Pele rates the French outfit as having a shot of causing an upset because he doesn’t believe that the Rossoneri are the force they once were.

“No longer are they the great Milan,” he declared. “But great players and great teams can click in any game. I think we meet them at the right time because if we beat AC Milan now, Marseille can approach the other games more serenely.”

Pele will be a guest of the club at the Stade Velodrome on Tuesday evening in order to honour the achievements of the European Cup winning side of 1993, the only French team ever to lift the trophy.

Juventus vs Bordeaux

Juventus playmaker Diego has been ruled out of the Champions League match with Bordeaux, but he is looking forward to playing in the competition as soon as possible.

"We face some good teams and for me there will be a special challenge - when we face Bayern in Germany, as they are my old rivals," he explained to UEFA's official website.

"I know that game, as well as many others, will be difficult. However, I think we will go far and do well in the competition."

Recently the Brazilian's style of play has gathered comparisons with stars of the past such as Zico, Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Baggio.

"I've always admired those players and I am glad to hear my name mentioned next to theirs," he continued.

"I want to write my own history at Juventus. I feel very happy and motivated here. The supporters send shivers down my back and I think I've begun to get to know my team-mates. I feel at home."

The Brazilian's absence is likely to make room for Italian youngster Sebastian Giovinco against the French side.

Maccabi Haifa vs Bayern Munich

Although Maccabi Haifa are one of the most easily recognised names in Israeli football, the country that stands almost at the crossroads between Europe, Asia and Africa is hardly a nation renowned for its performances in the beautiful game. Indeed, Maccabi are aiming to become the first side from Israel to progress beyond the group stages of the competition.

However, their task looks more than a little awkward, as they have been thrown into a group with two of Europe’s traditional giants – Juventus and Bayern Munich, whom they host on Tuesday evening – as well as under-rated French champions Bordeaux.

Though Maccabi's league campaign only started in mid-August, their European campaign has been raging since mid-July when they hosted Northern Irish side Glentoran in Haifa. They hammered them 6-0 to set the tone for a qualifying run that would also see them sweep past the challenge of FK Aktobe, whom they trailed 3-0 at home before mustering a stunning comeback to progress in the unlikeliest of circumstances, and Salzburg, who were despatched with greater ease.

Tuesday’s match represents a giant step up; suddenly Maccabi find themselves confronted with household names, big reputations and world class players. In order to deal with the occasion, the match has been moved from their usual Kiryat Eliezer arena to the Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv, which is approximately three times the size.

If a white-hot atmosphere can be mustered at the changed venue, and if Maccabi can make a strong start, they will hope to claim something from this match as it will be their home fixtures that they will aim to win.
